2019 Clan Gathering

The 30th Inter-tribal Gathering (Powwow)  of The Clan of the Hawk in Evansville, Vermont August 3rd and 4th, 2019 was blessed with beautiful weather, and wonderful friends.

The music of First Light Drum and the Waban Drummers was heard across the grounds as people took part in the Couple’s Dance, Dance for Elders, Dance for Veterans, and the children’s Candy Dance during the 30th Annual Inter-tribal Gathering of the Clan of the Hawk.

Justin “Thunderbear” Deth, the weekend emcee, also played the drum and flute at intervals. George Larrabee taught Abenaki language lessons in the chapel. Over twenty people were given new Native Names during the Naming Ceremony held by Chief Spirit Water.

The amazingly pleasant weather and Saturday’s famous Carlson “local caught” fish fry were favorite attractions. Our special Sunday pet parade saw dogs from six pounds to sixty in procession in the Sacred Circle.

Visitors from North Carolina, Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Florida stopped in the refurbished Looking Glass Museum during the weekend. Many little ones conquered their unease in the “touch me museum” and posed for photos with the brown bear and hundred year old tortoise.

Julia Marden, a member of the Aquinnah Wampanoag Nation, was on hand to show visitors how she makes her famous baskets. She keeps alive the 17th century traditional art of finger weaving, using only her hands to make tightly woven baskets and containers.

On Sunday morning clan members showed off their short order skills and cooked up a great breakfast and a terrific picnic-style lunch. The grounds were dotted with vendors offering up everything from handmade drums and beaded accessories to Maple Syrup and jewelry.

When Assistant Chief Dan “Wolf Howling” Duhaime gave the closing prayer, everyone was sad to see the weekend end. It was one of the best Gatherings the Clan has ever held.
